I have found that one of the quickest ways to level things out and promote inner peace is to do something that I love to do. Of course, first I have to know what I love to do and thankfully I do! Some things I love to do include:
- going to live music shows,
- having a good workout,
- drinking a hot cup of coffee,
- walking in a park on a nice day, and
- walking the streets capturing photos and video.
Knowing what you love to do requires self awareness that it took me a long time to develop. Perhaps some people have this awareness naturally but for me it took until my middle years to cultivate. However you get there it’s a place you want to get to so you can find more moments of inner peace.
Beyond knowing what you love to do you have to take the critical step of actually doing those things as often as you can. The simple things (such as having good coffee) are relatively easy to do daily, but the more complex things you must intentionally make time for. Have you ever returned to an activity you loved after a long time and then wondered why you waited so long to do it again? I have. It happens less and less these days but when it does I remind myself to be intentional about my activities.
In today’s busy world it’s so easy to get caught up in day-to-day life (which gets exponentially more demanding as your responsibilities grow) but I’ve found that people can do things that make them happy on a regular basis as long as they (I) commit to making time for these things that our ego makes us feel are inconsequential.
We often make excuses about why we shouldn’t do things but for these things that we love (and promote our inner peace) let’s resolve to make excuses as to why we should put other things off so we can do the things we love to do.
